On February 16th, the superhero epic film Black Panther debuted as Marvel’s most recent entry into its cinematic universe and has already gained massive success.

Ryan Coogler directed and wrote the Black Panther script, and Chadwick Boseman plays the starring role of T’Challa, The Black Panther. Letitia Wright plays T’Challa’s younger sister and high-spirited tech wizard, Lupita Nyong’o as undercover spy  and past love interest Nakia, and Danai Gurira as General Okoye Martin Freeman returns as Central Intelligence agent Everette Ross, and Andy Serkis portrays Ulysses Klaue, an arms dealer and criminal partnering with the main antagonist.  Michael B. Jordan is cast as Erik Killmonger, the main villain and holds a secret that endangers T’Challa’s role as king.

Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa returns to his home Wakanda, a highly advance nation disguised as a third world country, to rightfully claim his place as king. However, he’s torn between traditions and his morals to become the king he aspires to be. Meanwhile, he and his close allies must face the threat of Klaue’s threat of smuggling Wakandan weaponry, along with Killmonger, who has his own agenda for Wakanda. T’Challa must see things with a new perspective use the full power of the Black Panther to save Wakanda and the world.

Themes of reality, such as racial inequality and foreign aid, adds depth into the plot and conflict T’Challa must face. Even Killmonger differentiates from other Marvel villains as a redeemable one with understandable motives. Along with gender balance and representation of Africans cultures, the Black Panther does more as a movie by inducing a cultural shift and breaking boundaries.

The dedication of research and portrayal of African folklore and culture are evident in the film’s production. The story holds heavier components compared to other Marvel movies, though it balances nicely with comedy. In addition to the rich story of the film, visuals don’t fail to disappoint with cinematography shots that complement every scene. Costume design, settings, and special effects used are all colorful and graphic. The film’s soundtrack album, featuring artists like Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd, has already reached the top of the charts. Overall, the Black Panther’s story blends seamlessly epic action moments with inspiring and beautiful counterparts into an amazing film that all audiences can appreciate.

The Black Panther is definitely worth the watch and is nothing short of revolutionary. Audiences can expect to see the Black Panther in action again soon, as he will return in the upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Infinity War, coming later this spring.
